THE ARTWORK IN THE MAKING - a step-by-step explanation from Adam Oswald on how he creates each piece.

The first step is obtaining research materials - mostly in the form of photographs. For this painting I am using somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 pictures. The best reference material for deer that I have found is from several trail-camera's I have set up around the areas where I bowhunt. These camera's do not have the best quality, but they give me a good idea of deer behavior and I can make my sketches from there.

In this picture you can see my sketch, this painting is titled "Guts-n-Glory". It depicts a buck in the harvested corn field with some does, but as the sun starts to rise over the tree line he realizes he is going to have to fight to keep their companionship. This will end up being a very warm, orange/brown painting over all, but the breath coming from the deer and traces of snow on the ground will give it a feeling of a chilly morning... a cold morning in November when this scene plays out for whitetail deer. I don't like to hide elements in paintings, which is very popular among wildlife artists... I prefer to add extra's that appear where they would normally appear in the wild. Some of the "extra's" in this painting will include the bowhunter in the tree to the right, a shed antler laying in the grass just in front of the buck and possibly a trail-camera attatched to one of the trees on the right side.
In this step I have glazed over the entire canvas with a warm orange color. Since this will be a sunrise setting this color will help create a warm mood for the painting.
Now I have completed the "ROUGH-IN" stage. Basically it is just a darker color than used in the last step and it is applied thicker. This step takes only about 15 mins as I just want to get a general idea for the layout of the painting.
I have started the sky and the distant tree line... I will be re-working most of this, but it helps set the mood with the colors used in the sky and the trees.
The sky, tree line and the effect of the sun creaping up over the trees are all very close to done. I have also blocked in all the deer and started to block in the area to the main bucks right.
Adding detail to the field and the distant deer and starting to block in trees and snow patterns in the foreground.
Here I am working my way to the foreground. I have added details to the trees and added the bowhunter. The grass and snow is being worked back and forth as I move forward in the painting. I have also blocked in the main elements of the main buck. I'm getting close now!
